Inov-8 AT/C Ultrashell Waterproof Jacket Review

All FRA approved races have a mandatory kit list, some the length of your arm and the requirement for a waterproof jacket with taped seams is quite strict.

Turn up without one and you don’t race, so after doing some digging I have found a reasonably inexpensive running jacket that will pass any kit inspection.

This Inov-8 AT/C Ultrashell Waterproof Jacket review should answer all your questions and provide piece of mind pre-purchase. Lets face it, this running malarkey isn’t cheap, so its best to buy right and buy once.

Thumbs Up

  • Super lightweight.
  • Completely waterproof.
  • Toggles tighten hood to your face and keep water out.
  • Durable

Thumbs Down

  • When zipped and hooded can be a little clammy.
  • Half zip is handy but full zip would have been better to get on and off.

Will The Inov-8 AT/C Ultrashell Waterproof Jacket Pass kit inspection?

Yes, it should pass all kit inspections. Hooded with taped seams that are up to FRA kit inspection standards.

Just How Waterproof Is It?

The technical jargon is below, its not completely water tight but lets talk about the Inov Ultrashell jacket in practice. After 8 months training and racing I have tested my jacket through varying conditions. I climbed Snowden in the snow and driving 40 mph winds, ran for hours through the Lakes during a torrential down pour and jogged in light rain during the heat of summer. In all three examples I stayed dry, warm and happy.

  • 2.5 layer waterproof fabric
  • 10,000 HH and taped seams

The hood has two toggles, which tighten to the aperture of your face. The hood also features a wire across the front to form a cap like ridge over your forehead. The sleeves are elastic and hug the skin well, while the length is just right to cover your derriere without hanging too low.

Lightweight And Extremely Portable

Very light, one of Inovates lightest actually, weighing an impressive 125g. You will not notice any additional weight and the jacket scrunches up to the palm of your hand. This makes it great in all races from short, sharp contests to longer ultra marathons. The Inov Ultrashell will save you plenty of space leaving room for other important gear in your hydration vest.

Wear Over Your Race Number – Its Transparent

Race number pinned to your tee? Don’t worry, marshalls will see it through your Inov-8 Ultrashell jacket. Transparent material adds versatility and saves you time.

Price

I paid £80 making the Ultrashell one of the more affordable high quality running jackets on the market. You won’t find many cheaper waterproof jackets which pass kit inspection. Add durability, packing size, weight and versatility for an extremely impressive product.
